Morecambe Bay 1&2 reflects my understanding of crossing as both a physical and emotional experience. The shoreline is a threshold—a place where land meets sea, where stability gives way to uncertainty, and where every tide redraws the boundary between departure and arrival. Rather than depicting a specific location, the painting explores the landscape as a space of transition, memory, and transformation. I am drawn to coastlines because they embody movement, distance, and possibility. They are sites of encounter where histories of travel, exile, belonging, and hope converge. |
Somayeh Roustaei
| I am an Iranian multidisciplinary artist working across painting, illustration, filmmaking, and socially engaged practice. My work explores memory, migration, identity, and belonging through poetic visual narratives. I hold a Bachelor's degree in Textile Design and a Master's degree in Illustration from the University of Art in Iran, as well as a Master's degree in Film Studies from Lancaster University, UK. My interdisciplinary practice combines image-making with critical and participatory approaches to storytelling. For two years, I facilitated art and wellbeing workshops with asylum seekers and refugees in Lancaster, deepening my interest in art as a space for dialogue, care, and cultural exchange. Working across painting, film, and illustration, I investigate the relationship between personal experience and collective histories, creating works that invite reflection on displacement, resilience, and human connection. |
